Charges are pending after a car hit a church foundation in the Allegany County Town of Hume, according to state police.

Alek L. Potter, 21, of Hume, was driving west on Route 19 at about 2:40 a.m. Thursday when he lost control of the car, which crossed the road and hit a road sign on the south shoulder, then the foundation of a church, police said.

Potter was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester in critical condition, troopers said.

His passenger, Christopher M. Jones of Fillmore, was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo and was listed in fair condition today.

Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be factors in the crash, troopers said.
