JAMESTOWN – A city police officer today was placed on administrative leave after he threatened to harm himself during an off-duty incident last week at his home in the Town of Ellicott, Police Chief Harry L. Snellings said.

Michael Bush was charged Tuesday by Ellicott police with obstructing governmental administration, five days after officers responded to a call of a “distraught male” at his home on the outskirts of the city.

Bush threatened to harm himself last Thursday, but after talking with police for a few hours he allowed officers to get him the medical attention he needed, Snellings said.

The obstruction charge was filed because he did not immediately allow officers to help him, the police chief said.

Bush was arraigned today in Ellicott Town Court and released under the supervision of the Chautauqua County Probation Office, Snellings said.

Jamestown police have started an internal investigation. Meanwhile, Bush will remain on administrative leave, Snellings said.
