A Southtowns man suffered fatal injuries late Saturday in a Concord crash after he lost control of his car, slid into oncoming traffic and was struck broadside by a pickup, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash took place shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Route 240, where the victim was driving a small car in the southbound lane. Witnesses told deputies that the victim’s car slid to the right side of the road before veering into the northbound lane, where the car was struck by the pickup before ending up in a roadside ditch.

Several motorists stopped to try to help the victim, who was trapped in his car. Members of the East Concord Fire Company freed the man and took him to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, where he died a short time later.

Deputies say it does not appear the man, 32, was wearing a seat belt. The victim’s identity has not been released, pending notification of his family.

The driver of the pickup, William Hastie, 21, of Angola, was not injured, deputies said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues. The Sheriff’s Office said the roadway was wet from falling snow but was not snow-covered.
