LOCKPORT – A homeless man who allegedly used his laptop computer to download and share child pornography while staying at the Niagara Falls YMCA was arraigned on a 27-count indictment Monday in Niagara County Court.

Louis W. Darling, 55, is charged with nine counts each of possessing and promoting a sexual performance by a child, along with nine counts of the latter as a sexually motivated felony. He faces a maximum 20-year prison sentence if convicted, Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth R. Donatello said.

County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas granted Assistant Public Defender David E. Blackley’s request for a psychiatric evaluation of Darling, who is hearing-impaired and used the services of a sign language interpreter during his arraignment.

Donatello said Darling was arrested Feb. 27, but failed to appear for an April court date in Niagara Falls. He was picked up last month in Washington State and extradited to Niagara County. Farkas denied bail.
