YATES – A Kendall man faces a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to run over a trooper Tuesday with his car, State Police said.

Trooper Dan Metz tried to pull over Carlos J. Botello, 42, at 8:20 p.m. after reports of a suspicious vehicle on Route 18 in this Orleans County town, police said.

Botello led Metz on a chase before eventually pulling over to the side of the road, according to police.

But as Metz got out of his patrol car and approached the vehicle, Botello looked back at him, put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated directly at the trooper, police said.

Metz avoided the vehicle, which sped off before Metz was able to catch up with him, according to state Police, who said Botello’s vehicle entered a farmer’s field and became disabled.

Metz arrested Botello and took him to the State Police station in Albion, where he was charged with second-degree attempted murder. He was arraigned in Yates Town Court and remanded to Orleans County Jail after not posting $250,000 bail.

In 2007, Botello and seven others were arrested in Albion after a two-month probe into the sale of marijuana in Orleans County.

Thirteen years earlier, Botello pleaded guilty to a count of first-degree reckless endangerment after he admitted firing six shots at the home of a sheriff’s deputy.
