Five lost hikers were rescued in Chestnut Ridge Park late Saturday after they became disoriented amid the park’s dense foliage and deep ravines, Orchard Park police reported.

The two males and three females who range in age from 12 to 19 had entered the park around 6:30 p.m. But as darkness fell they realized they could not find their way out and placed a 911 call at 8:26 p.m. using their one working non-GPS cellphone, police said.

Orchard Park police and Erie County sheriff’s deputies responded along with the Hillcrest, Orchard Park and West Falls fire companies. The Niagara Frontier Search and Rescue Organization also responded.

The hikers were found a mile and a half into the park by Orchard Park Police Lt. Patrick Fitzgerald and Deputies Brad Ballantyne and Doug Grube.

They were led out of the park by police to an area of Bunting Road where they were given a medical evaluation and released at the scene.
