Dunkirk police tracking a robbery suspect over the weekend found their man and, in the process, happened upon a shooting.

It began at about 9:45 p.m. on Friday when investigating the report of a man robbed at gunpoint in the 100 block of King Street, police said.

About two hours later, police located the suspect’s vehicle near Central Avenue and Second Street.

As patrols approached, gunshots rang out. Two men were spotted running toward the vehicle and were apprehended by officers.

Terin L. Butler, 22, of Jamestown, was arrested for the earlier incident and charged with second-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said.

Also arrested was Anthony M. Darling, 21, of Jamestown, who was charged in the shooting.

A Dunkirk man was struck by the gunfire but fled the scene, police said. He was located by police on Fourth Street but was uncooperative and refused treatment to his wounded arm, police added.

Darling was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree criminal mischief.

Darling also was charged with criminal mischief for smashing a rear window out of a patrol car while in custody.

Further charges are pending.

Dunkirk police were assisted by Fredonia police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with further information is urged to call Dunkirk police at 366-2222 or the confidential tip line at 363-0313.
