Four Erie County sheriff’s deputies have been injured by inmates during separate attacks at the Erie County Holding Center over the past two days.
The more recent attack happened at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, when a deputy was escorting Devan Hunley, 20, of Johnson Avenue in Buffalo, back to his cell, according to Undersheriff Mark N. Wipperman.
As the deputy tried to unlock a door, Hunley allegedly pushed him from behind, which caused the deputy to smash his face on the metal fire door, Wipperman said.
More deputies responded to the scene, where they struggled with Hunley briefly before restraining the prisoner.
Two deputies were taken to Erie County Medical Center with head, leg and hand injuries. Charges will be filed against Hunley once authorities know the extent of the injuries suffered by the two. Their names were not released.
The second attack happened at about 11 p.m. Thursday inside the Holding Center, Wipperman said.
Lakita Hawkins, 22, of Hopkins Street in Buffalo, was being escorted to another cell when she dropped her property and attacked one of the deputies from behind, the undersheriff said.
As Hawkins pummeled the deputy in the head, face and upper back, a second deputy tried to intervene but could not control the inmate. Additional deputies responded to an “officer down” emergency call and were finally able to restrain Hawkins.
In this incident, two deputies also had to be taken to ECMC, where they were treated for head, neck and back injuries. The two were released from the hospital, but remain off duty due to their injuries. Their names were not released.
