LOCKPORT – Two men were knocked unconscious in an unprovoked attack at a Lockport bar early Sunday, and city police reported Monday that a $1,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of two men wanted for their role in the attack.
The unidentified victims, both 21-year-old Lockport men, were attacked and punched at 2 a.m. Sunday in the 21st Amendment Bar, at Main and Locust streets. Both were knocked out and one suffered a head injury, police said.
Police Chief Lawrence M. Eggert said a long-time city businessman upset about crime in the city anonymously stepped forward to offer the reward.
“He just wanted to do his part,” Eggert said Monday. “He thought it would be a good idea to offer a reward so we could clear this up quickly. I think it shows good public spirit by helping us out.
City officials and police announced on Friday an impact zone for tougher crime fighting within the city, after a recent rash of incidents. The 16-block zone – bounded roughly by South Transit, Walnut, High and Erie streets – experienced at increase in calls by 27 percent in November and December from the same period in 2011. Those calls included two shootings during the past month.
The targeted zone is centered on Washburn and Genesee streets, a short distance from the 21st Amendment Bar.
Witnesses told police the two victims were followed into the bar by two men, both believed to be their early 20s.
“It was a short fight, one punch for each man,” Eggert said Monday. “Both were knocked unconscious. … The first suspect punched a guy in the head, dropped him unconscious on the floor and he hit his head. The second victim jumped to help his friend and the second suspect cold cocked him from behind and dropped him to the floor, then both suspects just walked out.”
Eggert said the attack appeared unprovoked. There is no detailed description of the suspects.
“There were no words exchanged, there was nothing,” the police chief said.
Both victims were treated and released from Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport following the attack.
Police are working to identify the assailants in cooperation with the victims and bar owner. Police are asking other witnesses to come forward and participate in the investigation. Eggert said police are trying to recover video security surveillance from inside the bar as part of their investigation.
