A car with a two-month-old baby on board slid into the median of Route 400 in Elma Thursday night, leading to the arrest of the driver on a felony charge driving while drugged with a child in the vehicle, Erie County Sheriff’s officials said.

In addition, the baby’s parents, who were passengers in the car, also were accused of endangering the welfare of a child for knowingly bringing their baby into a vehicle driven by an impaired person.

Sheriff’s deputies, assisted by a state trooper, were alerted to the single-car accident off the southside of Route 400, about a mile north of the Jamieson Road exit. Witnesses indicated an altercation broke out among the people in the car.

When authorities arrived, they found the adults “scattered on the median of the highway in the snow.”

Deputies found Maxmillion W. Mathis of Williamsville to be in an “intoxicated condition” and arrested him on a felony charge of DWI-Drugs under Leadra’s Law.

The baby’s parents, Daniel Hart and Angela Mead of Buffalo, were charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Sheriff’s officials notified Child Protective Services about the incident.

The parties involved were all checked out by paramedics from Spring Brook Fire Company. The adults were arrested and processed while the baby was turned over to a family member.
