For the second time in a month, a teenage boy in Orchard Park has been approached by a man who asked him to get into a vehicle.

The second incident prompted Orchard Park School Superintendent Matthew P. McGarrity to send a letter about student safety to parents Thursday afternoon.

According to the letter, Orchard Park police told school officials that the incident occurred at about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Milestrip Road in the Town of Orchard Park, when a white man in his 20s waved to the boy from his vehicle, then drove up next him and invited him to get inside.

The teen refused and arrived safely at his destination, the letter said.

The letter noted that the man was driving a gray Pontiac sedan, had dark hair and a medium build.

The first incident took place at about 11 a.m. Feb. 22 on Larned Lane off West Quaker Street in the village.

Police said a teenage boy was approached by a balding white man in his 60s who asked him to get into a red minivan. The boy refused and returned home safely.

McGarrity reported that all district staff and bus drivers have been notified of the incidents.

In his letter Thursday, McGarrity also urged parents to tell their youngsters never to talk to strangers, go to a secure location if they are approached and report the incident immediately to police.

Meanwhile, in Amherst, a middle-aged white man driving a red car and dressed only in pajamas and red glasses was being sought by Amherst police for allegedly trying to pick up two juvenile girls at Cherrywood and Birchwood drives as they were walking home from Heim Middle school at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

The vehicle drove off when the two girls ran from the car. They described its pajama-clad driver as possibly being between 40 and 50 years old. Tips can be telephoned to the Amherst police at 689-1311.
