A student, identified by police as Keshaun Johnson, 16, of Amherst, was arrested and charged with felony assault.
“It was not your typical high school fight,” Amherst Police Chief John C. Askey said. “They continued to fight in the presence of the principal and at least a couple of teachers.
The principal, Joleen Reinholz, “was knocked to the ground, but from what I could tell [she was] knocked unconscious for a short period of time,” Askey said.
Reinholz and an unidentified teacher required medical treatment, according to a statement posted on the school district website. No other details about their injuries was provided.
The fight broke out among four students at about noon in the 600 wing of Sweet Home High, at 1901 Sweet Home Road, school officials said.
District Superintendent Anthony J. Day said in the website statement that several building staffers and School Resource Officer Greg Trotter immediately responded to the altercation and that the district “is cooperating fully with the Amherst Police Department's ongoing investigation of the incident.”
Day added: “We take this and every incident within one of our school buildings very seriously and will take every step available to see that those involved received appropriate discipline. The superintendent also said he is “thankful for the continued work of our school community that makes Sweet Home High School a safe building four our faculty, staff, students and visitors.”
Amherst police asked that anyone with information about the incident to call 689-1311.
