Northeast District police shot and killed a pit bull dog early Sunday while investigating a report of gunfire at an East Delavan Avenue home.
Eight people, including a juvenile, were arrested on various charges, Police Department spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said.
As four officers entered 1457 E. Delavan shortly after 4 a.m., two people allegedly yelled “Let the dog loose!” to a woman, who allegedly opened a bedroom door, allowing the pit bull to come out.
Lt. Rickey V. Lark pulled his gun and fired about eight shots, killing the dog.
Those accused of calling for the dog to be sicced on police officers were identified as Ariel Simms, 22, and a 17-year-old relative, both residents of the East Delavan home. Simms allegedly fought with officers and had to be forcibly subdued, according to a police report.
The woman who opened the bedroom door to let the dog out was identified as Jasmine Hawkins, 22. Others arrested at the home were identified as two 16-year-olds; two other 17-year-olds, and Raja Allen, 20; all of Buffalo.
One of the bullets Lark fired ricocheted and struck one of the suspects in the hand. At Erie County Medical Center, three plastic bags of alleged marijuana were found in the pants pocket of Simms’ relative, police reported.
Police said they found a .40-caliber handgun in a freezer in the kitchen of the house, and a shotgun in the bedroom. Also recovered were nine .40-caliber bullets, one spent 20-gauge shotgun shell and three live shotgun shells, the latter located in a garbage basket.
Charges included attempted second-degree assault on a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of marijuana, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree obstructing government administration.
