LAS VEGAS, N.M. – New Mexico State Police said a Hamburg man was shot by officers Saturday night when he drove away from them, headed the wrong way on an interstate highway and then drove toward one of the officers.

State police have charged 72-year-old Albert Urban with two counts of aggravated assault on an officer and aggravated fleeing.

The incident began as a police chase near Las Vegas, N.M. State police officials said officers pursued Urban as he drove the wrong way on Interstate 25 southbound. They attempted to deploy stop sticks and pushed his vehicle off the freeway, but said he kept driving.

“The driver of the vehicle aggressively drove toward one of our officers, so shots were fired,” Sgt. Damyan Brown said. “He did suffer gunshot wounds. Unknown how many or what the severity was.”

Urban was listed in stable condition Tuesday at the University of New Mexico Hospital. State police plan to book him into the San Miguel Detention Center on a $100,000 bond after he is released.

No officers were injured in the incident.
