The man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of family members, resided in the upper apartment. Efforts by one of the residents in the first-floor apartment to alert him of the blaze were unsuccessful, firefighters said. Two adults and a child in the lower apartment escaped unharmed and were assisted by the Red Cross.
At about 3:30 a.m., the lower apartment residents were awakened by their smoke alarm, according to firefighters. One of the residents pounded on the door to the upper apartment but with smoke filling the structure, the individual was forced to flee.
The residents went across the street to a neighbor’s home and called 911.
The fire, which caused $35,000 damage to the 1 1/2-story, wood-framed building, was declared under control at 4:20 a.m. A cause for the fire remains under investigation, but firefighters think it may have been sparked by an electrical malfunction.
