A 22-year-old Niagara Falls man was arraigned Friday for a Nov. 3 incident in which he injured five people in downtown Buffalo.
Asad Hixon, of 4234 Dudley Ave., allegedly refused to stop for police after they saw him driving without a seat belt, drove away at a high speed, turned the wrong way into Niagara Square, ran a red light at Delaware Avenue and Edward Street, and then hit two vehicles and rolled his car over, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.
An indictment charged Hixon with three counts of aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of second-degree assault, three counts of third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful fleeing from a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting serious physical injury, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Hixon was arraigned before Erie County Court Judge Kenneth F. Case. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
His passenger, 18-year-old Dartanyon Robinson, suffered serious injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma for several days.
Natalie Gilland, 32, an occupant of the first car hit, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, as did Kara Smith, 32, and Kristen Armstrong, 36, who were in the second car struck.
Their mother, Karen Smith, 61, suffered a broken leg and arm that required surgery, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
