A Kendall man faces an attempted murder charge after he tried to run over a trooper Tuesday with his car, state police said.
Trooper Dan Metz tried to pull over Carlos J. Botello, 42, at 8:20 p.m. after reports of a suspicious vehicle on Route 18 in Yates, Orleans County.
Yates led Metz on a chase before eventually pulling over to the side of the road.
But as Metz got out of his cruiser and approached the vehicle, Botello looked back at him, put the car in reverse and accelerated directly at the trooper, police said.
Metz avoided the vehicle, which sped off before Metz was able to catch up with him. Botello’s vehicle entered a farmer’s field and became disabled, state police said.
Metz arrested Botello and took him to state police barracks in Albion where he was charged with second-degree attempted murder. He was arraigned in Yates Town Court and remanded to the Orleans County Jail on $250,000 bail.
The wild chase wasn’t the first time Botello has found himself in trouble with the law.
In 2007, he and seven others were arrested in Albion after a two-month probe into the sale of marijuana in Orleans County.
Thirteen years earlier, Botello pleaded guilty to a count of first-degree reckless endangerment after he admitted firing six shots at the home of Orleans County Sheriff’s Deputy Herbert McClellan.
