A 44-year-old Bronx man was arrested by federal agents in Buffalo Friday and charged with fraud and misuse of immigration documents.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said Abdus Samad attempted to enter the U.S. Thursday at the Lewiston Port of Entry using an allegedly fraudulently obtained U.S. passport as proof of citizenship. Immigration officers determined that he had previously entered the country under an alias and had obtained the passport by making false statements on his passport application.

If convicted as charged, Samad faces a prison term of up to 10 years, a fine of up to $250,000 or both.

Following an initial session Friday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, the defendant was ordered held pending a detention hearing next week before U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh B. Scott.
