LOCKPORT – A man who violated the terms of his probation on a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty was sentenced to a year behind bars Friday by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr.

Jason E. Evrard, 28, of Walmore Road, Wheatfield, had been placed on probation last year following a guilty plea. On May 10, 2012, Evrard slammed his grandmother’s Lhasa Apso dog to the floor, fracturing its pelvis, after the dog killed a kitten belonging to Evrard’s cat.

Kloch could have imposed a four-year prison term, so when he announced a one-year sentence, Assistant Public Defender A. Joseph Catalano said, “My client is fine with that.”

Kloch told Evrard, “What you really need is some time away from drugs, some food, time to find yourself.”

“I’m getting that now, Your Honor,” Evrard replied.
