Six people and their dog were left homeless a day after Christmas when their two-story house in the Village of Hamburg was heavily damaged by fire.
Two adults and four children, including the family dog, made it out of the home safely after the fire broke out about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
An adult man, whose name was not provided, was released after treatment at Erie County Medical Center for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
Village of Hamburg Fire Chief Dave O’Brien said the fire, at 374 Pleasant Ave., was believed to have started in a rear bedroom on the first floor. Erie County sheriff’s deputies and Hamburg police later Wednesday continued to investigate what sparked the blaze, which is estimated to have caused at least $100,000 in damage.
The house is uninhabitable and the family is staying with relatives, O’Brien said.
Linda Wray-Enser owns the property, but no further information was released by police or fire officials.
The house is at Pleasant and Westview avenues, in front of an automotive business.
On Wednesday afternoon, many of the windows on the two-story, gray-sided home were boarded up. Fire had torn through part of the roof and in other parts it was heavily charred. Smoke damage was extensive throughout the residence, O’Brien said.
Lakeshore, Woodlawn, Eden and Scranton firefighters also responded to the fire scene. The blaze was brought under control in 50 minutes, although firefighters remained at the scene for about 3½ hours.
