A Buffalo man remained missing Sunday night after he fell into the Niagara Gorge whirlpool area around 6 a.m. Sunday.
The man was fishing with two friends when he approached the water and was swept away, said Lt. Patrick Moriarty of the State Parks Police.
“His friends saw him yell for help and then he disappeared,” Moriarty said. Officials withheld his identity, pending notification of his family.
The search for the man involved members of Parks Police patrol units, the Niagara Falls Fire Department, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office’s Air One helicopter, U.S. Border Patrol, Coast Guard, Ontario Park Police and the Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.
During the search, a second body, not associated with the active search, was recovered south of the whirlpool area, on the Canadian side of the Niagara River after it was spotted by Air One. The body was recovered by the Niagara Parks Police High Angle River Team with help from Air One and Niagara Helicopters.
Niagara Parks Police, who are handling the investigation, said foul play is not suspected in the death.
This marks the second time in less than a month that a person has been snared by the fast-moving current of the lower Niagara River.
On the evening of July 6, a University at Buffalo MBA candidate slipped off an algae-covered rock and into the water while hiking the gorge with a group of friends and his mother. The body of Narang “David” Kim, 23, was pulled from the river after a three-day search by Parks Police.
Elsewhere in the gorge Sunday, on the Canadian side, a 22-year-old woman from Welland, Ont., injured her ankle and was helped out of the gorge by members of the Niagara (Ont.) Parks Police, Niagara Falls Fire Department, and Niagara Emergency Medical Services shortly before 4 p.m., authorities said.
Police said the woman was intoxicated at the time. She was charged with being intoxicated in a public place and was taken to Greater Niagara General hospital treatment of her ankle injury.
