A Kenmore woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault for deliberately running over a Town of Tonawanda girl with her SUV on April 26 in an incident Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita Jr. characterized as a “Twitter tantrum turned tragic.”

Liana Nieves, 18, of Crosby Street, entered her plea before State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski. Authorities said Nieves twice ran over Madeline Silvia, 17, on Chaplin Drive in the Town of Tonawanda about 10 p.m. The act, authorities said, was the culmination of a dispute over remarks posted on Twitter and Facebook.

Ms. Silvia, who had gone to Chaplin Drive to visit a friend, is still recovering from severe internal organ and pelvic injuries, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also said they will ask the judge to impose a term of 25 years in prison when Nieves is sentenced Nov. 7.
