A 41-year-old Toronto-area man is being held on a federal charge of eluding inspection for allegedly hiding in the trunk of a car that was inspected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents Sunday evening at the Peace Bridge.
Demetry Furman was ordered held on immigration charges after his arraignment in U.S. District Court in Buffalo this morning.
Furman had previously been denied admission to the United States because of a Canadian criminal record, agents reported. A spokesman for the Customs and Border Protection service said charges are being considered for the driver of the vehicle in which Furman was hiding behind some luggage.
