Federal judge rejects Kopp claim in Facebook case

A federal judge has ruled against an individual claiming to be convicted killer James C. Kopp and his request to intervene in the Facebook ownership case.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie G. Foschio said the request did not provide any legal justification for intervention and would serve only to delay the two-year old civil suit by Paul Ceglia of Wellsville.

A letter claiming to be from Kopp, who is serving a life sentence for assassinating Dr. Barnett A. Slepian in 1998, arrived at the federal courthouse in Buffalo last month. The writer said he and Ceglia had been pen pals for years and asked the court for permission to take part in the case.

A second letter, this one also written by someone claiming to be Kopp, was sent about a week later and suggested the original letter to the court was a fake.

Officials at Canaan Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania, where Kopp is an inmate, said they could not confirm the authenticity of the letters.
