Dunkirk police arrested a Canary Street man Wednesday whom they believe may be connected to a series of house burglaries in the area, officials said Thursday.
Gualberto Gonzalez, 35, was taken into custody following a burglary Wednesday in the 300 block of Dove Street. Investigators developed information that led to them to suspect Gonzalez, officials said. As police began searching for him, they spotted him and tried to stop him for questioning.
But Gonzalez fled on foot. Dunkirk police were assisted by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s K-9 union as they searched for Gonzalez and set up a perimeter.
Police said that just before 6 p.m., Gonzalez was seen going up the back stairs to his upper apartment and he was detained.
Authorities found evidence outside the apartment door that linked him to recent burglaries. Inside his residence, they also found stolen property and other items they believe were stolen.
Gonzalez was charged with two counts each of second-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny and a single count each of third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree grand larceny and fourth degree criminal mischief.
Police said Gonzalez confessed to burglaries at the Dove Street address and one on West 4th Street last week.
