GAINES – An Albion man was killed early today when his car ran off the road in the town of Gaines and crashed head-on into a newspaper delivery SUV, according to the Orleans County Shefiff’s Office.
Deputies said Cameron R. Hess, 22, was eastbound on State Route 104 near Crandall Road about 2:47 a.m. when his 2004 Dodge Neon ran off the south side of the road and crashed into a westbound 2008 Chevrolet HHR that was traveling along the south shoulder. The Chevrolet was a Rochester Democratc & Chronicle delivery vehicle, deputies said.
The force of the impact spun both vheicles around 180 degrees. Hess was extricated by Albion firefighters and pronunced dead at the scene.
Edward L. Schneider, 21, of Medina, the driver of the Chevy, was extricated by firefighters and flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester by helicopter. His passenger, Christopher A. Swan, 21, also of Medina, was thrown partially through the windshield. He was taken to Strong Memorial by Central Orleans Volunteer Ambulance.
The accident remains under investigation.
