The 16-month-old girl beaten to death in Jamestown this week has been identified as Nayla J. Hodnett.

But besides releasing her name, police Friday revealed few new details about little Nayla’s death, which the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled a homicide due to blunt force trauma.

“We know that the child was brought to the hospital early Wednesday evening, so we’re trying to backtrack and establish an exact timeline,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson. “In an nutshell, we’re trying to find out exactly how the injuries occurred.”

Investigators are interviewing relatives and friends of the family, but no arrests have been made.

“This is going to take some time to process the information we have,” Samuelson said. “I do not expect a quick arrest.”

However, the girl’s 25-year-old mother and the mother’s 30-year-old boyfriend are considered “persons of interest,” Samuelson said.

Neither was identified by police. The mother has been cooperating with investigators, but the boyfriend has not, Samuelson said.

The mother took the little girl to the emergency room of WCA Hospital in Jamestown late Wednesday.

The child was then rushed to Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, where she later died.

Nayla lived with her mother on Newland Avenue, where the boyfriend stayed with them occasionally, Samuelson said.

Anyone who may have information on the case is asked to contact the Jamestown Police Department at 483-7537 or use the anonymous tip line at 483-8477.
