A Buffalo man who had been arrested New Year’s Day on felony DWI and other charges after he drove 94 mph on the Kensington Expressway was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday along with his brother-in-law, a day after his pickup truck struck a house on the East Side.

Buffalo community activist Darnell Jackson said his nephew, Walter “Billy” Jackson, 45, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was on a ventilation machine at Erie County Medical Center with serious head and neck injuries.

He said his nephew’s brother-in-law, Anthony Watson, 35, was in the jail ward at ECMC with body and head injuries.

Watson was driving early Saturday when Buffalo police tried to pull over the vehicle near Genesee Street and Newburgh Avenue and it sped off. A short time later the vehicle struck a house at Newburgh and East Delavan Avenue.

Watson was charged with unlicensed operation of a vehicle and other crimes.

Darnell Jackson said Watson and his nephew were returning to Buffalo from the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls.

Watson was previously arrested at 11 a.m. Jan. 1 when a state trooper stopped him for speeding on the Kensington.

He was charged then with felony DWI because of a 2007 DWI conviction and with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle because his license had 24 active suspensions on it.

He also was wanted on two bench warrants involving vehicle and traffic charges and possession of stolen property.
