LOCKPORT – The wife of Cordarise M. Houston, the Niagara Falls man who was convicted April 2 of shooting a friend seven times and leaving him a paraplegic, pleaded guilty Thursday to trying to keep police from finding her husband by renting a motel room in which they could hide out.

Marguerita Houston, 24, admitted to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree hindering prosecution. She could go to jail for a year when she is sentenced Aug. 1 by Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III.

Cordarise Houston faces a potential 30-year sentence after being found guilty of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is to learn his fate July 10. The victim, John Petty, 25, lost the use of his legs as a result of a bullet rupturing his spinal canal.

Petty was shot shortly before 1 a.m. May 26 in his home. Trial testimony showed that before 4 a.m., Marguerita Houston was on her cellphone, calling motels. The couple was caught May 28 in the Motel 6 in Niagara Falls.
