A Buffalo man and a teenager have been indicted with three other suspects in the robbery and shooting of an employee of a company that fills ATMs with cash at bars and other businesses.
Ronald Hough Jr., 23, of Monroe Street, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the holdup Oct. 21 outside Dinny’s Place on William Street.
Anthony Cole, 16, of Bailey Avenue, is charged with first-degree robbery.
Prosecutors said the 57-year-old victim was sitting in a van outside Dinny’s waiting for his partner to finish filling the East Side bar’s ATM as he and his partner were making their rounds filling customers’ ATMs with cash.
Hough and Cole approached the van, and at Hough’s direction, Cole told the victim to hand over the remaining money – about $17,000, according to Assistant District Attorney Michael P. Felicetta.
When the victim locked the van doors and tried to call police, Hough shot him, and he and Cole fled with the money, Felicetta said. A good Samaritan rushed to help the victim, who was taken to Erie County Medical Center with significant internal injuries, Felicetta said. He underwent several surgeries and was hospitalized for a couple of weeks. He now walks with a cane and is slowly recovering, the prosecutor said.
Hough was arrested at a friend’s house Oct. 31. He had been on parole since last April for shooting a man in a 2006 holdup. He had pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree robbery in that case and was sentenced to 6½ years in prison.
After he was arrested in the ATM holdup, he was returned to state prison to serve the rest of his sentence. He will be arraigned Thursday before Erie County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio.
Cole, who had been released without bail in City Court after he was arrested, pleaded not guilty last week before DiTullio, who then ordered him held on $20,000 bail.
Two other suspects – Ronald Hough Sr., 53, of Monroe Street, the father of Ronald Hough Jr., and Kenneth Land, 42, of Clark Street – are charged with first-degree robbery for allegedly planning the holdup and following the victim’s van as he and his partner delivered cash to the ATMs.
Felicetta said Hough Sr. has six felony and 17 misdemeanor convictions, while Land has two felony and three misdemeanor convictions.
Hough Sr. is being sought on an indictment warrant. Land pleaded not guilty last week before DiTullio and is being held on $75,000 bail.
The fifth suspect, William Stroud, 24, of Haller Avenue, Cheektowaga, is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arrested Oct. 23 with the 9 mm pistol allegedly used in the holdup. He pleaded not guilty and is held on $50,000 bail.
The money was never recovered, Felicetta said.
