A 16-year-old driver is facing a series of charges after, police said, he went on a high-speed ride around the city in a stolen vehicle – and was involved in a hit-and-run accident in the process.

The driver, whose name is being held because of his age, of Berwyn Avenue in the city’s Kensington-Bailey neighborhood, stole a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that the owner had apparently left running in the driveway of her East Delavan Avene home Saturday, according to police reports.

He then drove the jeep at about 90 miles an hour on the Squajacuada Expessway, weaving in and out of traffic with two juveniles in the vehicle, police said. He exited the highway onto Niagara Street, struck a vehicle, injuring one person, then leaving the scene of the accident, police said. He then struck a pole, and fled the jeep along with the two passengers in the vehicle. The driver, – who will be 17 next month – was arrested about 4:50 p.m. Saturday on East Street. He was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny, unlawful use of a vehicle, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child.
