WARSAW – Wyoming County residents and merchants were warned Thursday of a telephone scam involving warnings about unpaid electric bills or asking in advance for payments to begin a newer style electric service for business.

Sheriff Gregory J. Rudolph and Undersheriff David P. Linder said the telephone scams which are coming from a 1-800 or 1-801 exchange identify the caller as a contractor or an electric company representative. Residents are warned their electric service will be shut off if they don’t send money immediately to a specific address. Businesses are told they must quickly send money to benefit from a new up-to-date electric service that otherwise won’t be offered again.

Anyone getting such a call should call their electric company before sending any money, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Elsewhere, in Hamburg, an elderly resident of a nursing home reported receiving a call asking for her credit card number for a “$350 trip to Florida.”
