ATTICA – Saturday evening’s inmate-caused injuries to two sergeants and three corrections officers at the Wyoming Correctional Facility in Attica are part of “an alarming trend of violence” caused by a violent state inmate population living in overcrowded facilities because of prison closures, according to Mike Dildine, Western Region vice president of the State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association Inc.
Dildine noted that Saturday’s incident occurred a little more than a week after an inmate at Wyoming Correctional Facility was stabbed in the chest by another inmate and was just “the latest in a string of assaults at the facility since the beginning of the year.”
Predicting that under current operational conditions in the state’s prisons “these types of aggressive assaults on staff will continue,” Dildine said Monday, “It is not a safe environment for our members to work in.”
Deion Brown, 19, the inmate who made the attack Saturday evening, was charged with felony assault which will add to the one to three year prison term he is serving for his Erie County robbery conviction two years ago.
