Three guards were recovering Thursday from injuries following a confrontation with inmates inside the state’s Gowanda Correctional Facility.
The Department of Corrections said Thursday that a sergeant and two corrections officers were treated for injuries and released following the incident Wednesday at the medium-security prison.
Authorities say the confrontation started in a shower area about 8:30 p.m. and involved nine inmates, who now face possible criminal charges.
The corrections officers’ union said the two officers suffered concussions and other injuries, while the sergeant was less seriously hurt. The union says a third officer also suffered minor injuries.
The inmates have been transferred to another prison and the incident is under investigation.
