A 36-year-old man was arrested Tuesday afternoon at Kenmore West High School and later made disjointed references to Sandy Hook, the Connecticut elementary school where 26 children and teachers were killed in 2012, Ton of Tonawanda police reported.

After officers arrested Derie O. Mohamed of the City of Tonawanda on criminal trespass charges, he said he had visited Somalia a few years ago, made the reference to “Sandy Hook,” and said he “wasn’t a terrorist.”

Because of those statements, Town of Tonawanda police contacted the FBI and federal agents interviewed him. A law enforcement said Mohamed was not believed to be a threat.

Mohamed had not registered as a visitor to the school but was seen inside by several students, who reported him. He was not armed when police stopped him and made no threats toward students or faculty before or after he was arrested. He is being held in the Erie County Holding Center and is scheduled for a court appearance Feb. 13.
