Amherst police today said they continue to search for three young men who attempted to rob a young man visiting an off-campus housing facility near the University at Buffalo’s North Campus late Tuesday night.

The failed robbery, which apparently involved an air pistol that was later recovered, resulted in a two-hour long shelter-in-place warning for students at the North Campus, before it was lifted at 1:33 a.m., according to police.

The thieves approached a visitor at the American Campus apartments off Sweet Home Road, but did not succeed in robbing the young man of valuables, Amherst Detective Capt. Enzio Villalta said.

The victim followed the thieves, who fled in a vehicle later abandoned in a campus parking lot near the Hadley Village apartments and continued on foot toward Audubon Parkway.

An air pistol, believed to be connected to the thieves, was discovered by police officers who found it in bushes by Hadley Village, Villalta said.

Both Amherst investigators and UB campus police officers have asked anyone who may have observed suspicious activity in connection with the robbery attempt to contact them. University police can be reached at 645-2222 and town police at 689-1311.
