An East Amherst teenager who broke into a home last summer while an adult accomplice waited outside in a truck has pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary.
The 16-year-old admitted that on July 10 he and Michael Codelia Sr., 47, burglarized a home on Transit Road near Muegel Road in East Amherst.
They were arrested after an off-duty Amherst police officer noticed a pickup truck backed into the home’s driveway and saw the teen trying to force open a door. The teen and Codelia then left and parked at a gas station down the street, but returned while the off-duty officer waited for on-duty police to arrive.
Codelia fled in his truck and the teen fled on foot, while state police and Erie County sheriff’s deputies and helicopters helped Amherst police search for them. They were found two hours later, and stolen property from the burglary was recovered, police said.
The 16-year-old faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced April 9 by State Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia, according to Erie County Assistant District Attorney Paul E. Bonanno. Codelia has pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and will be sentenced April 18 by Buscaglia.
Codelia also pleaded guilty last month in federal court in Buffalo to conspiracy to possess drugs with intent to distribute in the theft of $12,500 worth of oxycodone and other drugs from the Middleport Family Health Center pharmacy in Niagara County in August 2012. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
