A 35-year-old Town of Eden man facing state parole violation charges was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center after he was arrested on drug and drinking related charges while fighting Erie County sheriff’s officials Tuesday morning, investigators said.
Ernest L. Ruffin of Sandrock Road was arrested on Grand Island Boulevard at Staley Road on Grand Island about 11:45 a.m. after a call about a car partially blocking traffic at the intersection.
Sheriff’s Detective Brian O’Hara found Ruffin passed out in the driver’s seat of the car. When Deputy Chris Lesy arrived Ruffin came to and began cursing at the lawmen and trying to drive off, only to be stopped and forcibly taken into custody. A knife and a quantity of suspected cocaine were found in his car and he refused to submit to blood test.
Ruffin was charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. It was then learned his driver’s license was revoked because of prior incidents and he was the subject of an arrest warrant on a parole violation charge by the State Division of Parole for a local robbery conviction. He is being held pending Grand Island Town Court proceedings later in the week.
