Two drug operations funneling cocaine into Western New York from Florida, Boston and New York City were halted with the arrests and indictments of 40 people, New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced this afternoon.

Investigators seized more than $100,000 in cocaine, nearly $90,000 in cash, a cache of illegally obtained prescription painkillers – some of them allegedly procured by a nurse – three rifles and shoes that had been hollowed in the heels to hide cocaine. The seizures were made today and Monday in a roundup that has so far resulted in 35 arrests in Erie, Niagara and Genesee counties.

“We’ve taken down two major drug rings,” Schneiderman said at a news conference with State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico, Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster and representatives from several different federal, state and local police agencies that conducted the nearly 18-month investigations.

“These are folks who sold to vulnerable New Yorkers,” Schneiderman said. “We have taken a very hard shot against people who seem to think they can flood our streets with dangerous drugs.”
