The State Liquor Authority has revoked the license of a downtown bar where a fight early on New Year’s Day led to a shooting outside the establishment, Mayor Byron W. Brown announced Friday.
“I think this sends a clear message that we will not tolerate crime and violence in the downtown entertainment district and anywhere in the City of Buffalo,” Brown said.
The closure marks the third downtown bar authorities recently shut down following investigations.
Shortly after 3 a.m., an argument erupted inside Social Bar and Nightclub in the 200 block of Franklin Street.
A shooting followed near Franklin and West Huron streets.
Horace Miller, 19, was shot in the stomach, chest and lower back.
Shortly after the incident, Chemere R. Barclay, 21, of Durham Avenue, was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Brown directed the city Law Department to work with the SLA to take action against the establishment. An investigation ensued and the decision to close down the bar was rendered Friday.
“It had a troubled history and because of that troubled history ... we made the request to the SLA to shut Social down,” Brown said.
Problems included admitting underage patrons and fights.
In November, the landlord of the former Big Bad Wolf bar evicted the establishment from its Delaware Avenue location following a series of problems, including two separate shootings in and around the bar’s parking lot.
Barcelona on Pearl Street was shut down last year after a series of incidents, including a stabbing inside the bar.
In both cases, the city worked with the SLA and also put pressure on the bar’s owners and managers and to clean up their act or close down, Brown said.
