Man pleads guilty to beating of Lockport HS athletic director, monitor

LOCKPORT – Jesse F. James, 18, of Caledonia Street, Lockport, accepted a preindictment plea offer Wednesday in the Dec. 3 attack on the Lockport High School athletic director and a monitor during a basketball scrimmage at the school.

James, who lived in Rochester until six months ago, admitted to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree assault and faces a sentence of as long as four years in prison when he returns before Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas March 28.

His co-defendant, DeAndre T. Reed, 16, of Washington Street, Lockport, is to consider a similar plea during a court appearance today.

Athletic Director Patrick M. Burke and monitor George F. Apolito Jr. were punched and kicked while ejecting the pair from the gym for what a police report termed “vulgar” behavior. Police said James, who said in court he was kicked out of school in 10th grade for smoking marijuana, was impaired by alcohol at the time of the assault.
