A Casey Middle School art teacher was charged today with child endangerment in connection with allegations of inappropriate contact with a 13-year-old male student, the Williamsville School District reported.

The Amherst Police Department arrested Donna Sleap today following an investigation by the Williamsville School District and police into concerns of school staff members about her behavior.

School district surveillance video captured “what is deemed to be inappropriate contact between Ms. Sleap and the student,” according to a joint statement issued by the school district and police.

Sleap, who has worked for Williamsville schools since 1988, has been on paid administrative leave since Dec. 19.

“This is an unfortunate matter and the district is very disturbed by these allegations,” Williamsville Superintendent Scott Martzloff said in a written statement.

School staff members in October notified the administration about concerns about Sleap’s “observed behaviors,” according to the school district. School administrators began an internal investigation and notified the Amherst Police Department, as well as the state Department of Education.

“Today’s news in no way represents the values and character of our 1,500-plus faculty and staff members who remain dedicated to being positive role models for our students,” Martzloff said. “The school district is cooperating fully with the Amherst Police in the investigation and will continue to make the safety and well-being of students our top priority.”

A spokeswoman for the district said Williamsville administrators would have no additional comment on the arrest.
