Man sent to prison for string of downtown burglaries

A man who was on parole on a burglary conviction when he broke into five downtown businesses during a four-month period last year was sentenced Friday to 3½ to seven years in prison.

Erie County Judge Thomas P. Franczyk sentenced Brian Humphrey, 35, as a second felony offender. Humphrey had faced up to 35 years in prison.

Humphrey, no address listed, had pleaded guilty in September to five counts of third-degree burglary in connection with break-ins at three law offices and two other businesses.

Humphrey took a purse March 8 from a Main Street software consulting company; a laptop May 28 from a Franklin Street law office; a purse May 30 from a Delaware Avenue law office; two laptop computers June 3 from a Niagara Square law office; and a jar of loose change June 5 from a Main Street advertising agency, according to District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.

A presentencing report indicated that Humphrey was addicted to crack cocaine, prosecutors said.
