The search for a possible missing surfer off Hamburg Beach was called off after several hours Tuesday night, and officials said the report of a missing person apparently was unfounded.
The U.S. Coast Guard, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and Hamburg police and fire crews ended the search just before 10:30 p.m.
Officials speculate that the person who called in the report about seeing someone fall into the water while the caller was watching the sunset at about 8 p.m. possibly did not see a wind- surfer being picked up by a boat that was out on the water with him.
The Coast Guard and Sheriff’s Office had helicopters searching the area but saw no signs of problems.
