A Buffalo woman who tried to avoid paying the Internal Revenue Service about $25,000 in taxes could wind up being fined more than 10 times that much when she appears for sentencing Jan. 13 before U.S. District Court Chief Judge William M. Skretny, U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. reported Thursday.

Diane Abram, 61, faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $350,000 fine after pleading guilty before Judge Skretny to tax evasion and making false statements in a passport application, Hochul said.

Prosecutors said Abram was caught after she applied for a passport last January using the name Diane Ballard and an improper Social Security number. Investigators found that Abram had been using the false identity to elude tax collectors.
