LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man who pleaded guilty to a gun possession charge Tuesday will be given a chance at six months of probation, Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas said.

“If you don’t dazzle me in those six months, you’re looking at between two and seven years in state prison, plus three years of post-release supervision,” Farkas told Lecheay A. Renford, 21, of Niagara Avenue.

He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having a loaded, sawed-off shotgun in the Falls when police raided his apartment on LaSalle Avenue Jan. 24.

Renford was a witness to the 2009 beating death of counselor Renee C. Greco in a group home for troubled youth in Lockport, and testified at the trial of one of the men convicted in killing her. At that trial, defense attorney E. Earl Key accused Renford of taking part in the beating, which he denied.

Renford’s record also includes the armed robbery of a cab driver in the Falls in 2007.
