State Police are crediting an unidentified Good Samaritan with applying a tourniquet that helped control the bleeding of a teen who suffered a potential life-threatening arm laceration when the Jeep he was riding in overturned Thursday afternoon in the Town of Boston.
Boston-based troopers responded to the rollover accident shortly after 2:45 p.m. Thursday on Back Creek Road near the Boston Elementary School, where they found an overturned open-top Jeep resting on a roadside guiderail.
The occupants were outside the vehicle, and a 16-year-old male rear-seat passenger had suffered a severe arm laceration with arterial bleeding. Troopers learned that a passerby had stopped at the accident site, applied the tourniquet and left the scene without leaving a name.
The 16-year-old, who also suffered a fractured left wrist, was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where he later was listed in fair condition.
The investigation revealed the driver, Ryan C. Courteau, 17, lost control of the Jeep, drove off the road and onto the unpaved shoulder, then overcorrected in an attempt to get back on the road, which caused the vehicle to overturn, police said. He suffered a hand injury and was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital for treatment.
All four passengers were restrained in the vehicle, and no charges were filed, police said.
