WARSAW – A visit to a Gainesville home led to animal cruelty charges, after a cage containing sick and dead puppies was seen on the front porch, according to State Police.

Troopers went to the home of Robert J. DeCarr, 23, to pick him up on charges related to incidents involving children.

Police said DeCarr was accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl in 2006 and a 13-year-old girl this past May. He also was accused of attempting to inappropriately touch an 11-year-old girl in May.

When troopers went to DeCarr’s house last Saturday, they spotted the cage. It contained one dead puppy and three others that were emaciated and appeared to be infested with fleas.

Wyoming County Dog Control Officer Justa Goodell took custody of the animals – a lab and pit bull mix, which were taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment.

DeCarr, already facing multiple counts of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, also was charged with cruelty to animals and neglect of an animal, which are misdemeanor violations of the state Agriculture and Markets Law. A second resident, Thomas M. Hyde, 20, was arrested on the same animal-related charges, troopers said.

Following arraignment in Gainesville Town Court, DeCarr was sent to the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Hyde was released on appearance tickets, pending a future appearance in town court.
