BARCELONA –An 84-year-old Pennsylvania man was flown to an Erie, Pa. hospital and a 71-year-old Florida man was taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries after their vehicles collided at about 1:30 p.m. Friday on Route 5 in the Town of Westfield, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Charles R. Fredericks of Conneaut Lake, Pa., was driving east on Route 5 at a high rate of speed and attempting to pass several vehicles on the right side of the road when he rear-ended the car driven by Richard Schaack of Dunedin, Fla. Fredericks then drove through a fence and crashed in a hedgerow. Fredericks had to be extracted from his damaged vehicle by Westfield rescue workers and flown to Erie for treatment of his injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
