A 56-year-old Cheektowaga man was ordered Friday to serve a six month jail term for choking his former girlfriend by Cheektowaga Town Court Justice Paul S. Piotrowski.

Derrick E. Stevens of Atwood Place was sentenced on his guilty plea to criminal obstruction of breathing in connection with the June 2 incident in the home they had been sharing. Cheektowaga Police Capt. James Speyer said Stevens choked the woman with both hands until she almost passed out.

When the woman ran to a bedroom and tried to call police ,Stevens ran in after her and threw her to the floor. Cheektowaga Police Officer Jessica Stronka later that day arrested Stevens on both the obstructing breathing charge and harassment and obtained a court order of protection for the victim.

But on July 13 Stevens broke into the victim’s home and was arrested by Police Officer Jay Ober who found Stevens hiding in a closet. The victim managed to quickly call for police.

Justice Piotrowski rebuked Stevens and told him he was going to jail because of his history of criminal behavior.
